Selfish Is Healthish
The Artist’s Way Gathering this morning was a wonderful way to start the day! I’m feeling so much gratitude for the interwebs right now. It’s an amazing time to expand our creativity.
We talked about taking ownership of the word selfish. What if being selfish was not something to feel ashamed of, but instead the most altruistic way of being?
Artmaking is a communion with the self/the divine and deserves the utmost respect. Prominent culture tells us that focusing on our art is frivolous and egocentric, but this couldn’t be further from the truth. We make art for our health and for the health of those around us.We are called to make evident the beauty and pain of the world to bring all of us closer to divine creativity. Plus, as creative folks, if we don’t give this part attention, we get all twisted up inside, and nobody wants to be around that version of us.
We use creative expression to develop a relationship with our innermost selves, the most sacred part of us. Can we separate the world “selfish” from the word “egocentric?”💡
